Congratulations to Wendy Perdomo!

In early February, Dr. Sadigh, Director of Global Health at Western Connecticut Health Network/University of Vermont College of Medicine (WCHN/UVMCOM), went to the Dominican Republic where he signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the leaders of Universidad Iboamericana (UNIBE) Medical School in Santo Domingo. UNIBE Medical School is the only English-speaking institution in the nation of its kind.

Dean Marcos A. Nunez of the medical school, alongside other key leaders of medical education at UNIBE, are considering conducting collaborative research on Zika Virus with UVMCOM scientists and partnering with UVMCOM to implement new curricular developments in UNIBE Medical School. In exchange, UNIBE’s International Program has offered UVM medical students a customized six-week elective that includes cultural activities, Spanish classes, community work, tropical medicine courses, research opportunities, and clinical rotations.

During his trip, Dr. Sadigh also taught a rigorous and intensive course in clinical epidemiology and biostatistics to close to 30 students, among them faculty. A final examination was offered to anyone interested in a scholarship for a one-month clerkship at WCHN. The first winner of the scholarship was Dr. Wendy Perdomo, an alumni of UNIBE Medical School where she recently graduated with summa cum laude honors as valedictorian.

During her medical school career she took the lead as the president of the Medical Student Association. Since completing a one-year research internship at Laser Center in Santo Domingo, Dr. Perdomo has participated in several clinical trials as sub-investigator and assistant doctor. We welcome Dr. Wendy Perdomo to WCHN.

Dean Nunez of UNIBE Medical School, Dean Loraine Amell Bogaert of UNIBE International Affairs, and Dr. Jomar Florenzan, the site director of WCHN/UVMCOM Global Health Program in the Dominican Republic, will attend Global Health Week at UVMCOM in April to further discuss these collaborative projects. We are excited for this new partnership with UNIBE Medical School.
